The Institute of Surgical Pathology covers the whole spectrum

of morphological diagnostics and graduate as well as postgraduate medical education in pathology. The Institute is engaged in both clinical research using molecular methods and basic science research. The institute consists of the departments biopsy/autopsy, cytology, pediatric pathology and molecular pathology (diagnostics/research). The Cancer Registry of the Canton of Zurich is affiliated with both the Department of Pathology and the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine. It is fulfilling an important function in the documentation of tumours and registration of cancer incidences and serves as an important tool in cancer epidemiology.

The aim of the Institute is to provide for highly specialised diagnostics on a tertiary care level combined with with both clinical (patient oriented) research and education on the highest level. Therefore, the Institute of Surgical Pathology has a central and pivotal function within the University Hospital as well at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich.
